This bridge's future is at risk!

Bridge Status: This historic bridge is slated for demolition and replacement as soon as funding is available under a Seismic Replacement program!

View Archived National Bridge Inventory Report - Has Additional Details and Evaluation

This bridge is a beautiful example of a pin-connected Parker truss bridge. It is traditionally composed, but has fairly massive members for a bridge of its age and design. The bottom chord seemed larger than average. The bridge's superstructure was listed as in "Serious" condition, but overall the truss is in good condition. The low rating likely refers to one isolated area of deterioration that is the "controlling" element for that rating. This is a bridge that would most certainly be feasible to rehabilitate. However, the bridge is slated for demolition and replacement under a "seismic replacement" program. This is somewhat unusual. Pin-connected truss bridges elsewhere in California have been retrofitted to be protected from earthquake damage. There seems to be no reason why this bridge could not also be retrofitted. By design, pin-connected truss bridges, with their loose, flexible joints at every connection point, seem like they would be well-suited to dealing with an earthquake, especially when combined with a retrofit.
