This bridge is arranged somewhat unusually because the shortest span, a single deck plate girder span, is in the middle of the bridge, with the larger main truss spans at each end of the bridge. The short deck girder span appears to have been placed to cross over a natural rock outcropping in the middle of the river. A shorter span just long enough to span this obstacle was placed, leaving the longer truss spans to provide a wide opening for the river itself. As such, the bridge appears to demonstrate how the rocky geography was something that was left in place and built around (rather than blasted away) and it also shows that the railroad had a limited area of acceptable locations for the bridge, since placing the bridge in a slightly different position would have avoided the rock.
