This bridge is one of a group of twelve railroad over highway bridges dating c. 1930 in Oakland County. They are individually noteworthy because they retain good historic integrity with little design alteration. Most of the examples feature the same design and architectural details, although a couple deviate from the standard design. As a group, these bridges are noteworthy as a the result of a large project which affected the development of Detroit's northwestern suburbs. The construction of these bridges resulted when Woodward Avenue, the road which leads right to downtown Detroit and is for all intents and purposes Detroit's Main Street, needed to be widened to an extent that the railroad line which paralleled Woodward Avenue needed to be moved elsewhere. A location east of Woodward Avenue was selected for the railroad line, and these bridges were built to separate the new railroad grade from the local highways.
