This bridge is an extremely rare example of a Melan arch bridge, which involves using solid steel arch ribs inside the concrete for reinforcement instead of the reinforcing rods (rebar) that later became the dominant reinforcement type. There are actually two Melan arch bridges in Melan park, the other one a short distance east of this one.

This bridge is a concrete arch bridge that has stone facing to make it look like a stone arch bridge. Looking under the bridge however, the concrete is visible, as well as the bottom of some of the i-beam reinforcing, exposed by minor spalling.

The two Melan arch bridges in Como Park were built by William S. Hewett and Company of Minneapolis, Minnesota who also built the first Melan arch bridge in the United States, in Iowa.
