This bridge has relatively short spans as well as extremely heavy truss design which is likely what resulted in the unusually shallow looking trusses in this bridge. The strength of this bridge's trusses come not from depth of truss, but the fact that the trusses are configured as two pairs of truss lines for a total of four truss lines supporting the loads above.
At a more recent date, this bridge was widened on one side. Plate girders were added on this side. Additionally, the original stone piers were widened with concrete to hold these girders. The concrete was poured using stone form liners to simulate the appearance of stone.
