This bridge is one of a fair number of similar bridges in Chester County that are of unusual design. While not highly significant in terms of beauty or heritage value, they are unusual because they combine a traditional stone substructure with a cutting edge (for the period) reinforced concrete and steel superstructure. They appear to be confined to Chester County, having been designed by the county. The superstructure is a steel stringer bridge with a concrete deck. Stringers are encased in concrete. The outside of the superstructure is also faced in concrete, which extends above the deck to hold the pipe railing system.

Information and Findings From Pennsylvania's Historic Bridge Inventory

Discussion of Bridge

The one span, 33'-long, encased steel stringer bridge built in 1919 is supported on stone abutments and has pipe railings. The stone wingwalls are surmounted by stone parapets. Concrete encasement was favored in the state because it provided protection for the steel and eliminated the need to periodically paint the beams. The encasement has been lost from several of the beams. A representative example of one of the most common, 20th century bridge types and designs in the state, it has no innovative or distinguishing details. Other encased steel stringer bridges have been identified that are earlier and have more distinguished contexts. The bridge is one of 639

Discussion of Surrounding Area

The bridge carries a 2 lane road over a stream in a rural area of active farms, open fields, and brush. The setting does not have historic district potential.
