The Des Plaines River must have never needed a lot of clearance for boats. The bascule bridges can open for any size boats, except that they were built with overhead electric cables which limit the height of vessels. Also, the vertical lifts such as this bridge do not raise a whole lot. Look at how short the towers are! Compare it to Welland Canal vertical lift bridges, which lift for Great Lakes freighters like Glendale Avenue Bridge.
This bridge features a Baltimore through truss approach span at each end of the bridge. The movable part of the bridge utilizes the Pennsylvania truss configuration. Connections on the bridge are riveted.
