Introduction

Water towers might at first seem an odd thing to find on a historic bridge website. However, there is a certain type of water tower that should appeal to any metal truss bridge enthusiast, which is the type referred to as the "cone tower" or what I sometimes call a "v-laced tower" or a "pin-connected tower." These towers were apparently built during the same time that the metal truss bridge was enjoying popularity, and as metal structures many of the same building techniques were used on these towers. I personally enjoy seeing these towers because of the v-lacing on their supports. The towers also often have attractive details as well, including lattice railings around them, and some even have little decorative finials on top. Like truss bridges, they come in a variety of shapes and sizes, some holding a lot of water, some holding less, and holding it is different shaped containers.
