FAQ

These shells were found along the Turkey River next to the bridge. It appears that there are some mussels that are making their home next to the structure as the river has a sandy shore.

Previous bridge or just a culvert crossing a creek

This was found during the photo op and is located just 300 feet west of the bridge. This remains a mystery, especially because of the design as you can see in the next pic.

Carries Pheasant Road over Turkey River
Design: truss/through/warren
Design Details: "The Dietzenbach Bottom Bridge is an excellent example of the now rare late nineteenth century pin-connected, wrought-iron Warren truss. It seems to be the work of the creative and well-known engineer Horace Horton, the founder of the Chicago Bridge & Iron Company. While the bridge has been moved from its original location, both sites show the transportation roles played by bridges in Iowa.

"The Dietzenbach Bottom Bridge stands as an important example of the pin-connected wrought-iron Warren truss."

Oblique view

This photo was taken five feet onto one's property which resulted in one of the residents running half naked down the road towards my car to confront me about it. After explaining that I was just a photographer and not a hunter from Minnesota, he let me go but not without saying "Next time you step on my property, ASK!" The whole experience was for the books.....

Overview Looking East

In the heyday of the Chicago Great Western Railway, Oelwein was the hub for the three major routes of the railroad. A rail yard was located on this bridge and to either side. The CGW shops were located just south of this location, one of the largest rail shops in the United States at the time of its construction in 1899. Numerous tracks were here, and this subway provided a method of passing beneath the myriad of tracks that served the facility. (Auto buffs will know that Walter P. Chrysler was a supervisor in the CGW shops from 1905 to 1909.)

Barrel Shot Looking East

Note the sign. The CGW went through several ownership changes, including purchase by the Chicago & Northwestern in 1968. The C&NW was, in turn, acquired by the Union Pacific in 1995. The old short line was about to be abandoned when it was saved by TRANSCO in 2002, which operates the 18.8 mile short line as the D&W. It was named for Dan and Woody, two TRANSCO employees who lost their lives in a tragic accident in Oelwein.
