The bridge deck covered with snow. I originally set out to photograph 6 bridges in Hardin County this weekend. But with 14" of new snow and a wind-chill of -40* I settled for one. Guess I will have to go back next spring.

IA57 Overpass

Carries IA57/Old US 20 over Illinois Central Railroad
Design: girder/deck/plate
Design Details: "Designed by the Iowa State Highway Commission, the continuous steel plate girder of two asymmetrical spans is broken into two unequal lengths with an interesting detail off-center of the middle pier.

"Located on the northern edge of Ackley in the Etna Township on the county line dividing Franklin and Hardin Counties, the Illinois Central railraod tracks which were instrumental in the rapid development of Ackley...In 1932, the IC Overpass replaced an old wooden viaduct built in 1903. When it was built in 1932 the road which it carried was also upgraded from a local gavel road to a paved interstate highway. The new overpass is a continuous steel plate deck through girder 334' long. It is of unorthodox design having to fit at an acute angle to the railroad line. In terms of its construction, it represents the era's response to the demands of the speedier and heavier motor vehicles and the highways which had to be redesigned to accomodate them.

"This document was prepared as part of the Iowa Historic Bridges Recording Project performed durng the Summer of 1996 by the Historic American Engineering Record (HAER). The project was sponsored by the Iowa Department of Transportation. (IDOT). Preliminary research on this bridge was performed by Clayton B. Fraser of Fraserdesign, Loveland, CO."

Carries Pedestrian Walkway next to 170th Street over Slight Depression
Design: truss/through/whipple
Design Details: "Configured as a pin-connected Whipple (or double-intersection Pratt) through truss, the Hardin City Bridge is one of only eight such structures remaining in Iowa. It is the only bridge in Iowa by the short-lived Western Bridge Works, Fort Wayne, Indiana. With its Whipple web configuration, cast-iron hip blocks and bearing shoes, and rolled wrought-iron components, the Hardin City Bridge typifies wagon bridge construction of the late 1870s.

"In April of 1879 the suprevisors awarded the contract to Western Bridge Works of Fort Wayne, Indiana. Using cast-iron joint blocks and wrought-iron structural sections produced by the Passaic Rolling Mills of Paterson, New Jersey, and the Pottsville (Pennsylvania) Rolling Mills, Western Bridge completed its erection of the 140' pin-connected truss late that year at a cost of $3145.38.

"This document was prepared as part of the Iowa Historic Bridges Recording Project performed during the Summer of 1995 by the Historic American Engineering Record (HAER). The project was sponsored by the Iowa Department of Transportation. (IDOT). Preliminary research on this bridge was performed by Clayton B. Fraser of Fraserdesign, Loveland, CO."

Interesting Debris

Just in the woods east of the south abutment are some old pilings and bracing. This might be from a previous wooden bridge that the current one replaced, or it could be the remnants of an old repair job to the current structure.
