This bridge carried the Lincoln Highway over the Chicago & Northwestern Railway tracks in Mount Vernon. The photo was taken from the bridge that carries the historic version of the highway now.

The south approach
The narrow lane was the Lincoln Highway for many years. The bricks are original paving and this block is one of only a handful of places in the country where original Lincoln Highway brick paving is extant.

Railing detail, looking east
This bridge was closed in 1996. The UPRR (UP acquired the C&NW in 1995) wanted the bridge torn down, because for many years, students of nearby Cornell College were accused of throwing rocks at passing trains. The bridge was renovated over 1997-1998.

The north approach
This road carried the "proclamation route" of the Lincoln Highway. The initial route of America's first coast-to-coast paved highway was laid out in 1913. The Lincoln Highway came from Mount Vernon over the 10th Avenue Bridge, across this bridge, into Marion and then into Cedar Rapids. The route changed in the early 1920's, bypassing both this bridge and the city of Marion.

First Avenue Bridge carries US 151
Three bridges cross the Cedar River in downtown Cedar Rapids by also crossing May's Island in the middle of the river. (Many locals refer to Mays' Island as "Government Island" because it is the location of the courthouse.) The large building in the foreground is the Veteran's Memorial.

Carries Sutton Road over Wapsipinicon River
Design: truss/through/whipple
Design Details: Whipple through truss
"This Whipple through truss is structurally significant wagon crossing and a rare example of a double-intersection Pratt truss with the rare use of wrought iron components along with its truss configuration (diagonals extending over two panels). It is one of only eight pin-connected Whipple through trusses remaining in Iowa and is the longest of the eight.
"This document was prepared as part of the Iowa Historic Bridges Recording Project performed durng the Summer of 1995 by the Historic American Engineering Record (HAER). The project was sponsored by the Iowa Department of Transportation (IDOT). Preliminary research on this bridge was performed by Clayton B. Fraser of Fraserdesign, Loveland, CO."

I particularly like the text of the second paragraph: "This beautiful bridge is a salute to the integrity of our forefathers, who built so many arches long ago, and it is still less expensive to build an arch in 1973 than any of the many other more conventional multiple girder structures that are so popular today." | The plaque goes on to talk about the "...sixty year old 16th Avenue arch bridge that was built in 1910..." that was replaced in 1988.

The Northwest Face
When I shot this bridge last Summer, I didn't really think of it as a historical structure, so I never placed it in the database. Given the terrible flooding in Cedar Rapids this week, the assumption that all of these Cedar Rapids bridges are totally inundated and the failure of the CRANDIC railroad truss, this bridge may, ironically, be history. Here it is, as it appeared in August, 2007. JRM 6/14/08.

Overview
This bridge was found by chance while on a bridgehunting tour, as it can be seen from the Hwy. 151 Bridge. Since the bridge was fenced off from both ends and far away, the last option was to focus in on the span with the camera and take some shots from a nearby local road. From Google Earth, it appears that the bridge's flooring has long since been removed and the bridge is now nothing more than a truss structure.

Like Dave's photo, mine was taken looking west from the adjacent road bridge. I wanted to poke around some more and get some better shots, but the former bridge site is now abutted on either side by housing. Note that the Rock Island took the time to outfit this little bridge's piers with ice protection.
