I know very little about this bridge except that it seems to carry two roads across a creek that feeds Timber Creek, which in turn, feeds the Iowa River. It is typical of rural bridges in Iowa.

Carries Shady Oaks Road, Old Lincoln Highway over North Timber Creek
Design: arch/through/marsh
Design Details: "The Rock Valley Bridge represents the culmination of an extensive concrete bridge construction program undertaken by Marshall County in the 1910s. It is the only span built by the county on the Lincoln Highway, America's first transcontinental route. This medium-span, reinforced concrete rainbow arch is a representative example of the hundreds of such structures designed and marketed by their inventor, Des Moines engineer James B. Marsh. Dozens of rainbow arches were built in Iowa in the 1910s, 20s, and 30s. Now only eleven remain, most in deteriorating condition."

Carries Third Avenue over Linn Creek
Design: arch/through/marsh
Design Details: "The South Third Avenue bridge in Marshalltown is one of fifteen known concrete rainbow arch bridges in Iowa. It is considered an important structural form in the development of reinforced concrete technology and illustrates Iowa's significant civil engineering heritage. It was designed by the March Engineering Company of Des Moines, Iowa, for the City of Marshalltown. James B. Marsh also was granted the U.S. patent for this bridge style. Also considered important is the fact that the interior reinforcing varies from that specified in the original patent and, in some details, varies from the design plans.
"This [HAER] documentation fulfills the obligations the Iowa Department of Transportation and the Federal Highway Administration under a Memorandum of Agreement between the Federal Highway Administration, the Iowa State Historic Officer, and the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation, pursuant to 36 CFR 800. The bridge was photographed in November, 1979, by Grau Studios, Marshalltown, Iowa and printed by Demett, Muessig, and Associates, Ltd., Iowa City, Iowa, in February, 1981."

Overview
Note that the north abutment seems to have been a pier at one point. You can also see where the concrete encasing has come off, and you can see the original stones. This bridge most likely had a north approach trestle that was later filled in. This may have been when the pier was encased in concrete and rebuilt into an abutment.

Not Looking Good...
Looking south; John Marvig photographed this bridge in 2014 when he came through to photograph the big truss bridge in the background. The bridge looked to be in fine condition then, but things have definitely changed in two years. The bridge has heaved up at this end and pulled away from the abutment. The bridge has twisted and is bowed to the west. It looks like the bridge is sagging in the middle; perhaps it has piles settling. This bridge will need some serious work or may need replaced before this section of the trail can be finished.
