double unusual
1st unusual: hip vertical eye is split in two and surrounds floor beam hanger; load is thus directly beneath it. 2nd unusual: extra lower chords and hip verticals added later got a longer pin to hold them all instead of the more typical end plate welded on.
Photo taken by Andrew Pearce in September 2012
239229
lower chord eyebars are original, aided by a newer additional set. Floorbeams are probably replacements. River seems to have shifted in 120 years, leaving hardly anything more than bog underneath this bridge.

Even standing in the middle of the river, it's hard to get the whole bridge in the picture. Wide angle lens and some serious tree trimming is needed for that!

Notable and unusual
I'll come back in the winter when the plants are gone, but it certainly looks like the upstream "public" side of the arch is made much flatter.
Photo taken by Andrew Pearce in September 2012
239235
arch seems more circular on the downstream "private" side where it is only viewable from one home's front yard.

B0510 - a brand new arch bridge in a style 80 years old to match the other bridges in the area. Higgins Mill Bridge is just around the corner and down the road a bit - http://www.bridgehunter.com/nj/somerset/bh53523/ This is also a common style for concrete bridges in the bi-county area.

so typical of the area
two lane road narrows to one, goes around a sharp curve, and a 110 year old bridge appears out of the leaves. It may be hard to believe but this scene happens more than 150 times in the Somerset and Hunterdon County area.

Skew!
Can you see the skew? Look at where the end posts meet the portal bracing
Photo taken by Andrew Pearce in September 2012
239241
Skew Too!
Top laterals against the top chords really show off the major skew too.
Photo taken by Andrew Pearce in September 2012
239242
I'd guess it was 30-40 degrees. Note the bolts with their square washers along the top chord that have replaced some of the original rivets.
Photo taken by Andrew Pearce in September 2012
239243
Diagonals and counters seem original. Generations of silt have created a small island here.

rebuilt abutments, new wooden decking, newer floor beams of a heavier nature with double hangers.

Smells Like Creosote Under Here
Guard rails are on L brackets so they screw into both the ends of the deck and down through the top some inches in from the edge. Note the fairly lightweight lower chords, and the secondary deck bracing between the floor beams.

Spiders!
OMG, spiders LOVE bridges. Even though the town crew had been through just an hour ago with the blowers and rakes and snippers, the bridge is covered in cobwebs.
Photo taken by Andrew Pearce in September 2012
239260
More spiders. Ick. Look closely and you can see the "skew plates" on the floor beam hangers that allow the hangers to be square to the bridge while mounting a floor beam with a 40 degree skew.

new lower chord pins, doubled floor beam hangers, and new floor beams. No effort has been made to make these bridges 15-20 ton rated "modernized"; they are posted at 3 tons.

East Millstone A frame - Pre 1912
Looking North on Canal Street, which once ran along the Canal in East Millstone. At right front is the Railroad Hotel (also known as Pace's Hotel) on the corner of Canal Street and Livingston Avenue. In 1860 it was a hotel known as Vanderveer House, run by J.H. Vanderveer. The building with the cupola is a storehouse. The one next to it is the porch of Wilson's store. The A-shaped canal swing bridge and the bridgetender's house are visible in the background. Of the buildings pictured, all that remains is the bridgetender's house located at the beginning of the present Millstone Causeway. Copy of a W. W. Tetlow Real Photo Post Card

Griggstown Canal bridge 1905
The original gristmill in Griggstown was built by Benjamin Griggs in the 1740s. In the 1830s the original mill was torn down, because it was in the path of the future Delaware and Raritan (D & R) Canal. The second mill (shown at left) was constructed next to the causeway at that time. Charles Hoagland was the last owner of the second mill, before it was torn down. The wood was sold to build a barn elsewhere. Copy of a W. W. Tetlow Real Photo Post Card.

Griggstown Canal bridge and muletenders barracks 1920
This building is believed to have been built by Abraham Van Doren around 1834. It was called the 'Long House' and was used to house mill-hands for the second gristmill in Griggstown. Later the building was enlarged to house mule-drivers and called 'Towpath House.' Today the building houses a canal museum and a ranger station

1910 East Millstone Wortman St. bridge
As the train left the depot in East Millstone, the tracks descended in to a gully. This photo was probably taken at the point where the tracks went under Wortman Street in East Millstone. Although the tracks are now gone, the small ravine where they once lay is still visible from a modern paved road. Copy of a W. W. Tetlow Real Photo Post Card.

This photo was taken from a vantage point on the tracks about mid-way between Franklin Street and Wortman Avenue in East Millstone, looking west (c. 1909). Note the hay press (middle left) and the railroad's engine house and depot (center background), which was located on William Street at Rail Road Avenue (Bradley Avenue). Postcard is postmarked 1909. East Millstone Jct NJ - Wortman in background 1907
Until the 1850s, East Millstone was called Johnsville for major landowner John Wyckoff. The village was renamed when a railroad was planned from New Brunswick to Flemington. In 1854, the Millstone and New Brunswick Railroad Company laid out six miles of single lane track from New Brunswick to East Millstone. The railroad never extended any farther, but it did bring an economic boom to the small canal village of East Millstone. This photo was probably taken from the roof of a store-building on the west side of Market Street looking east in February 1907. Copy of a W. W. Tetlow Real Photo Post Card.

The Weston Mill (built c. 1740) operated for nearly 250 years. It was the scene of a bloody skirmish during the American Revolution, when raiding British were searching for flour. Wilbur Smith was the mill's last owner, beginning in the 1920s. In 1982, the structure collapsed and in 1983 the remains burned in a fire. Copy of a W. W. Tetlow Real Photo Post Card

The Weston Mill was built as Van Neste's Mill about the 1740s. This photograph shows the side of the mill which was rarely photographed (the side not facing the river)(c. 1910). These buildings are gone now. This is the present-day site of the causeway between Zarephath and Manville. Copy of a W. W. Tetlow Real Photo Post Card.
