Carries WA 165 over Carbon River
Design: arch/deck/steel
Design Details: The Fairfax Bridge is one of only two extant three-hinged steel arches in the state of Washington. The building of the Fairfax Bridge across the Carbon River canyon in 1921 was the culmination of years of earnest petitioning by the people of Fairfax. Their campaign for a highway to connect their isolated community to the outside world was skillfully orchestrated by a local county commissioner, James R. O'Farrell, and it was in his honor that the bridge -- the final link in this road -- was dedicated. The employment of a three-hinged steel lattice arch for the type of bridge was a prudent yet uncommon decision. Greatly suited both aesthetically and structurally to the picturesque and rocky gorge, it now stands as one of only two of its kind in the state of Washington.

Carries Longmire Service Road over Nisqually River
Design: suspension/wire
Design Details: The oldest surviving road bridge in Mount Rainier National Park, the Nisqually River Suspension Bridge is one of the few road-bearing suspension bridges in the National Park system. Although shorn of its original log elements, the timber bridge continues to reflect the NPS "rustic style" through its use of native material in an attempt to harmonize with the rugged park landscape.

Carries Nisqually Entrance over Van Trump Creek
Design: arch/deck/closed
Design Details: The "rustic style" Christine Falls Bridge carries the Nisqually Road over the narrow box canyon of Van Trump Creek at Christine Falls. The graceful stone-faced reinforced concrete spandrel arch bridge contributes to the setting, and is one of the park's most successful examples of the integration of road-related structure into the environment. The overlook at the bridge is one of the most popular in the park.

Carries West Side Road over St. Andrews Creek
Design: arch/deck/closed
Design Details: This structure employs the National Park Service's "rustic style;" the rugged stone veneer conceals its filled reinforced concrete arch construction. This naturalistic treatment allows the bridge to blend into its scenic setting below the Puyallup Glacier and upstream from Denman Falls. Of special interest are several landscape features associated with the bridge, including stone steps leading down from the bridge to the creek and a hiking trail to the nearby waterfall; this trail was constructed by workers from the Emergency Conservation Works project. Another trail from the bridge leads to the nearby historic St. Andrews Creek Ranger Station.

Carries WA 162 over Puyallup River
Design: truss/through/parker
Design Details: This is a rare example of a reinforced-concrete through truss bridge. The form of its members and details are unique. At the time of its construction it was thought to be the longest concrete truss or beam span in the country. It has been placed on the National Register of Historic Places. The McMillan Bridge was built by Pierce County in 1934. It replaced a steel truss span of the same name and location, damaged by flooding of the Puyallup River. Similar to its predecessor, the new bridge employed a through-truss type, enabling it to accommodate the largest practical waterway. This required its width and length to increase.

Carries Nisqually Road over Nisqually River
Design: girder/deck/plate
Design Details: The first bridge on the site was distinguished for its construction at the snout of the Nisqually Glacier; this made the Nisqually Road "the first road in America to reach a glacier." However, the siting just below the massive glacier led to the destruction or heavy damage to four subsequent bridges by glacier floods. The present high-level bridge, 600' below the old bridge site, was designed to survive the extreme conditions sometimes encountered at the crossing.

Carries Washington 302 over Burley Lagoon (Henderson Bay)
Design: girder/deck/concrete
Design Details: The Purdy Bridge is a 550-foot long, continuous box girder bridge. It is one of a handful designed and built in Pierce and King Counties during the 1930's. Workmen poured concrete around a hollowed, steel box girder to form the roadway slab and top flanges, 15-feet wide and 7-inches deep at the crown. The long, 190-foot middle section was designed as a simple suspended beam. The piers were also cellular and flush with the sides of the deck box girder.
