True to WisDOT's standard approach to historic bridge preservation, this beautiful arch bridge, which is a landmark gateway into the historic downtown, is now targeted for demolition and replacement! More information is here.
As a historic bridge that is a gateway into a historic downtown, this bridge could and should be rehabilitated.
An unusual feature of this bridge is the single riveted steel beam approach span.
Above: Historical 1881 photo showing previous bridge at this location. Despite a somewhat similar appearance, these girders do not match the approach span of the 1931 bridge. Note pipe railings. The bridge was built by the famous King Bridge Company of Cleveland, Ohio
Above: 1899 photo showing that the bridge had been replaced with lattice railing. A section of this lattice railing appears to survive on an adjacent building.
