I-5 Nooksack River Bridges
Two bridges carry I-5 over the Nooksack River. The northbound bridge, on the left, was built in 1955; the southbound bridge opened in 1971. Both bridges need fresh coats of primer and paint to protect the steel from weather and other elements. In the summer of 2014 contractor crews for WSDOT will remove rust, old paint and other debris from the bridges, then put on primer and paint. The work is weather-dependent; if conditions are good the crews could finish this year, but they will come back in 2015 if necessary.

I-5 Nooksack River Bridges need new paint
Rust is visible on the vertical members of the northbound I-5 Nooksack River Bridge. To protect the bridges for years to come, in 2014 contractor crews for WSDOT will remove rust, old paint and other debris from both spans over the Nooksack River. When that’s finished, they’ll put on fresh coats of primer and paint. The schedule depends on the weather. If good conditions last through the summer, the work may be completed this year. If necessary, the work can be finished in 2015.

Rust shows through on northbound I-5 Nooksack River Bridge
The south portal of the northbound I-5 Nooksack River Bridge is showing its age, which rust coming through the paint. In 2014 contractor crews for WSDOT will remove rust, old paint and other debris from the northbound and southbound Nooksack River bridges, then put on fresh coats of primer and paint. This will protect the structural steel from weather and the elements for many years. If weather conditions are good the work may be completed in one summer. However, the contract allows crews to finish in 2015 if the weather interferes.

Weeding through the Nooksack River Bridges repainting
Through the years, soil and other debris collects on bridges. On the northbound I-5 Nooksack River Bridge, after dirt collected in this joint, seeds found their way in and weeds have sprouted. This is among the debris, rust and old paint that will be removed from the northbound and southbound Nooksack River bridges when contractor crews for WSDOT prepare to put fresh coats of primer and paint on both bridges in 2014. The new primer and paint will protect the bridges from weather and other elements for many years. The contractor crews hope to finish this summer is the weather cooperates. If not, crews will return in 2015 to complete work.
