Maine does not have a large population of historic bridges, nor does it have any 19th Century bridges on the current highway system. However, Maine did have a number of unusual, rare, or otherwise significant historic bridges when HistoricBridges.org undertook the documentation of the most (but not all) of the state's top historic bridges in 2012. However, preservation of historic bridges is nearly nonexistent in this state and since that time a staggering number of the bridges have been demolished. Unless things change, Maine will soon have very few bridges of historic value remaining.
