HistoricBridges.org currently features coverage of high significance bridges in the state with some outside assistance in expanding the coverage expansion of railroad bridges. Wisconsin is unique in that its collection of historic railroad bridges is far more impressive than its dwindling collection of historic highway bridges, largely due to a nearly non-existent preservation effort for highway bridges. The rich collection of railroad bridges is in part due to the Chicago NorthWestern which had extensive trackage in the state and had a habit of relocating and reusing old bridges. Milwaukee is a city noted for its railroad bridges that display designs that are locally common, yet rare in the rest of the country, notably bobtail swing bridges and truss bridges with lattice truss configurations.
