These bridges may be one of the few surviving examples of a divided highway passing over a roadway that retain original R4 style railings. Most of Michigan's divided highways either do not pass over highways or are built to Interstate Freeway standards, and as such any original railings from these facilities have been removed. This section of US-12 has this overpass and interchange, but the roadway is not designed to Interstate standards and has lower speed limits. It is for these reasons that the original railings remain here. As such, this bridge is a rare look at what all of Michigan's early freeways would have looked like, all decked out in Michigan's beautiful R4 railings.
These bridges are also noteworthy as well preserved examples of pin and hanger stringer bridges. A suspended span is clearly visible between the two piers over the roadway. The pin and hanger assembly is riveted as are the diaphragms on this bridge.
