View A Report About The Windoc Freighter Collision

This bridge is one of several vertical lift bridges of similar design on the Welland Canal. The bridge can be raised to provide a clearance of 119.7 feet (36.5 meters).

In 2001, this bridge was mistakenly lowered on top of the freighter Windoc before it was able to get all the way past the bridge. The Windoc suffered severe damage, while the bridge suffered minor damage mainly to the bottom chord. The bridge was repaired shortly after the accident. The only major alteration and visible change following those repairs is that bolts replaced original rivets, indicating where steel was replaced or repaired. A video of the collision is available here.

A visit to the bridge in 2012 found on of the large cable drums (which handle the cables at the top of the towers) apparently has been replaced, since the original has been left on display on the ground near the bridge.
