Overview: Abandoned concrete girder and a wooden bridge over Choctawhatchee River on AL 123 at the John Hutto Park in Newton
History: First bridge (wooden) built during or before Civil War and replaced by current old bridge (abandoned stringer bridge) probably during the 1920's. The current old bridge, although left abandoned in place, was replaced by the new bridge in 1976.

Old AL 123 Concrete Bridge

The old concrete bridge replaced the original wooden bridge. However, this bridge was replaced in 1976 by the current AL 123 bridge.

New Bridge and Original Bridge

In the picture one can see two bridges. The new (currently in use) bridge can be seen near the top of the photo. The remains of the original wooden bridge can be seen in the center of the photo.

Original Wooden Bridge

This is the bridge made famous by the book,"13 Alabama Ghosts and Jeffery," by Kathryn Tucker Windham. As one can see, all that remains of the old wood bridge are some wooden stubs and a couple of support columns (top center of photo).
