The USS Iowa passes under the Golden Gate for the final time as the ship heads to retirement in San Pedro, CA. This passage occurred on Memorial Day weekend, 2012, declared the celebration weekend for the 75 anniversary of the opening of the bridge.

Design: tunnel
Design Details: Reported to be the largest single bore tunnel in the world, the double decker road through the tunnel connects the double decker eastern and western spans of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge. The upper roadbed is suspended between the walls of the tunnel. When commuter trains were taken off the bridge in the late 1950s and traffic patterns on the bridge modified from bi-directional on both decks of the bridge to one way on each deck. To accomodate trucks in the outer lanes of the upper deck, the upper roadbed in the tunnel was lower slightly, but noticeably.
