Sierra Railway Train on the Bridge
SERA #48 moves a brace of stored tank cars across the span. Sierra operated the line between 2009 and 2011, and backed out whilst finalizing the deal. SCCRTC purchased the line and negotiated a deal with Iowa Pacific in mid-to-late 2012.

Oxidized Bracing
Wafer-thin and peeling off "like the skin of an onion", the old La Selva bridge approaches a fate of oxidation in the California sun.

Removing the Spans
Before Stacy & Witbeck can commence replacing the bridge with their own pre-fabricated steel structure, the old one must be removed. To do this, a Liebherr 250-ton mobile crane was pressed into service on the north end of the bridge, seen here after removing span #9.

Removal Continues...
Two larger towers and about three spans remained intact by late September, the corroded northern tower forever relieved of its load before it, too, ends its loadbearing journey. Cohen notes that "the combination of wind, sand and salt air will corrode bare metal in a hurry. Check out the tracks on the crane"--those too have developed a skein of rust. Thankfully the replacement bridge will be painted with a (county-chosen) tasteful olive-drab color to resist the marine moisture.

Bird's Eye View
December 5th, 2014--Howard Cohen writes "I was told the final four girder spans would be placed by the end of the day tomorrow, but they were able to complete the placement of all four by noon today. I received a call from one of the project managers around noon telling me if I wanted any aerial shots I better get down to the jobsite before the rain started and the crane departed. Here is a shot from this afternoon."
