Flooded Bridge On The St. John River
The USGS gages the St. John River at Fort Kent, Maine at Station 01014000. A major flood in 2008 was the highest flow measured at this station, based on record going back to the 1920s. This photo shows the International Bridge in Ft. Kent, right at the water surface of the flooded river. That flood peaked at 183,000 cfs, much higher than the previous peak around 150,000 cfs.

Carries Lowery Road over Meduxnekeag River (N Br)
Design: truss/pony/warren
Design Details: "Constructed in 1910 by the Town of Houlton at a cost of $6,310.07, the Smith Bridge is a riveted steel, two-span Warren pony truss with an overall length of 173 feet. It is the second oldest and longest structure of the type known to exist in the State. The structure is significant as an example of early twentieth century bridge building technology in Maine, and as an unaltered representative of a class of steel trusses which have virtually disappeared from the State's highways.
"The Smith Bridge is a two-span, Warren pony truss with rivited connections. Its five panel trusses, each span of which is 86'6" in length and 17 feet in width, rest on concrete abutments and a center pier. Wooden planking forms the deck and an iron lattice is emplyed as a hand rail. The bride is located on Lowery Road in the northern part of the Town of Moulton where it spans the Meduxnekeag River."
