Trestle connects to Ore Dock
Rail cars are pushed onto the ore dock by locomotives; the cars are dumped into pockets below the tracks. Chutes are dropped to the cargo hatches of the ship and the ore is dumped into the hold.

Looking west
The trestle is massively built to carry the weight of the heavy ore.

216928
Looking north
The Ore Dock stands about 80 feet above the water, so the trestle has to match that height. A string of empty ore cars is being pulled off after being dumped.

The trestle ends at the earth rampart carrying the railroad tracks down to the railyard.

M/V MESABI MINER
This ship is part of a fleet of nine 1000 foot long ore carriers, along with many smaller vessels. The 1000 footers are too large to pass through the St. Lawrence Seaway locks, and so cannot leave the Great Lakes. The 250 foot long boom on the ship carries an unloading conveyor; the structure under is is a conveyor to a coal-fired power plant on shore, allowing the ships to earn money carrying coal for the plant's boilers.
