Carries I-94/I-69 Business Loop over Black River
Design: other
Design Details: "The Military Street Bridge is [was] the oldest surviving bascule highway bridge in Michigan and is an excellent example of the underneath counterweight trunnion design developed by Jospeh B. Strauss, an important twentieth century American bridge engineer.
"The Military Street Bridge is a double-leaf bascule bridge of the Strauss trunion type, with counterweights and the operating machinery located beneath the deck.
"Each leaf consists of three parallel steel girders, placed 13 feet apart, center to center, surrounded by a steel framework, 65 feet wide and 54 feet long, which in turn, supports the roadway and sidewalks."

AC Rheostat Controleers
Motive power was supplied by 220v 3-phase AC motors that produced 25hp with a maximum starting torque of 306 pounds. Both leaves were controlled from here by these rheostat controllers, built by Westinghouse in Pittsburgh. Carries Canadian National Railroad over St. Clair River
Design: tunnel
Design Details: "The St. Clair Tunnel was the first full-sized subaqueous tunnel built in North America. Joseph Hobson, the Chief Engineer, successfully combined three significant new technologies -- a tunnel shield driven by hydraulic rams; a cast iron tunnel lining; and the use of a compressed air environment. This tunnel eliminated a major bottleneck in the rail transportation system linking the American midwest with its eastern markets."

Photocopy of Illustration
Original appeared in Scientific American Aug 9, 1890. Drawing showing steel tunneling shield at work, segment hoist and workmen. The tunnel was pressurized to 2 atmospheres. Horses were unable to tolerate the high pressure, so mules were used instead.

Photocopy of Engineering Drawing
Original in Engineering News Oct 4, 1890. Scales indicate height in feet above sea level. The gradient is labeled "1 in 100" but the correct gradient should be 1 in 1,000. "Profile of part of St. Clair tunnel under river showing section of river bed as determined by borings." (1890.)

St Clair Tunnel Electric Locomotive
After several accidental deaths in the tunnel from asphixiation, the tunnel was electrified. Nine of these electic locos pulled trains though the tunnel until 1958. Parts had to be made so maintenance costs skyrocketed. Since diesel locomotives did not have the same exhaust issues as steam locomotives, the electric logos were retired and scrapped in favor of diesels.

St Clair River Tunnel Postcard
ca. 1907, prior to electrification of the tunnel. At that time, trains were pulled through the tunnel by camelback 0-10-0 steam locomotives that were bi-directional. In this postcard, one of the 0-10-0 locos emerges from the Pot Huron end of the tunnel.
