Lying near the bridge are the chassis of two railroad cars. It appears this bridge will soon be replaced with these large recycled pieces of metal. So even the replacement has "low-budget" written all over it.

US Route 67 Bridge J21 St Francis River Greenville Missouri
This 180' pin connected 7 panel Pratt through truss was acquired by the Williamsville Greenville & St Louis Railroad from the MoPac and was moved and erected here in 1908-09 by the Crebo Construction Co of Kansas City at a cost of $12,000. After the W G & ST L and its successor the Ozark Valley Railway went bankrupt the bridge was abandoned. It was later acquired by the Missouri Highway Department and modified for use in place by US Route 67. In 1930 new concrete approaches were built and the south pier was reinforced by the S J Cohen Construction Co of Blytheville Arkansas and in November 1930 the truss was widened 6' by the St Louis Structural Steel Co. Bridge J21 remained in use on Route 67 until the Wappapello Dam was built and a new bridge was then necessary at a higher elevation. It was replace by Bridge J21R, which was built on an upstream alignment by George W Condon Co. 1940-41. The Pratt truss was dismantled match marked and set aside by the Corps of Engineers who then moved it to Cross County Arkansas where it was re-erected in 1944-45 on State Route 42 over the St Francis Bay Ditch. The Arkansas Highway Department Bridge No. for that span was No. 2011.

1930 Reconfiguraion of the Williamsville Greenville & St Louis RR Bridge for US Route 67
This 1930 view looking NE shows what was once a MoPac railway bridge, after it had been relocated to Greenville in 1908-1909 by the Williamsville Greenville & St Louis Railroad and re-erected there over the St Francis River. The bridge was abandoned when that railroad and its successor, the Ozark Valley Railroad, went bankrupt. The railroad bridge spanning the St Francis River at Greenville Mo. sat idle for some 12 years before it was acquired in 1930 by the Missouri State Highway Dept. who had it modified and re-purposed it for highway use by US Route 67. This photo was taken just before the truss was cut lengthwise and widened 6'- work done by the S. J. Cohen Const. Co. and their sub-contractor, the St Louis Structural Steel Co.. The reconfigured bridge with a 20' wide concrete road deck and new concrete approach spans opened to highway traffic in 1931. The Lower Greenville Bridge built in 1911 by the Stupp Bros Bridge & Iron Co. (seen at the left here) was then demolished. When Wappapello Dam was built 10 years later, the twice re-purposed bridge was then dismantled by the USACE and moved again to Cross Co. Arkansas - were it was subsequently re-erected and reused again as a highway bridge on Arkansas Route 42 over the St. Francis Bay Ditch.

Bridge over St Francis River on Greenville Patterson Road N side of Old Greenville
Located just north of Old Greenville, this bridge across St Francis River near 'Leeper's Ford' on the 'Lake Creek Road' from Greenville to Patterson & Piedmont was built for the Wayne County Court by the American Bridge Co. at a cost of $3,499. In October 1905 the Wayne County Journal Banner newspaper noted that construction had begun on the 200' span, which was supported on concrete filled iron tube piers. A wooden approach with a sharp turn and steep grade was constructed on the low western end of the bridge (Cramer 1972:269)

Four views of the upper bridge at Old Greenville
Built in 1905-06 by the American Bridge Co. under contract with the Wayne County Court, this wooden decked bridge was removed by the USACE in 1947 after Lake Wappapello reached a settlement with the county for damages to its roads and bridges. R. F. Cramer (1972:269) indicates that the bridge was condemned by the County January 31, 1935 and that when it was eventually removed the steel was reused in other county bridges
