Tunnel 3.8
Tunnel #3.8 marks the entrance to the first major rapid, Tunnel Rapid, which is a fairly easy Class III involving a large wave train that just happens to have a huge boulder (called "Can Opener") submerged right in the middle of it. During the epic flood of 1964, the river crested at 36 feet (more than 30 feet higher than the level shown in this picture.) The average flow for the day it crested (June 9) was nearly 100,000 cfs, approximately the same amount of flow that goes over Niagara Falls during the summer months. The '64 flood completely washed out the fill around the tunnel and destroyed the railroad bed.
