This is a common postcard that is marked “Black Bridge, Boonville, N.Y.” Although the postcard is marked “Boonville”, this bridge is actually in Lewis County between Boonville (Oneida County) and Port Leyden (Lewis County). The nearest intersection is Route 12 and Kerwin Road. The railroad tracks can be accessed from Kerwin Road. It appears that this bridge has not been used for quite some time. It is difficult to get a good photograph of the bridge from track level, and I couldn’t find a safe (or easy) path to the riverbed. Most of the postcard views I’ve seen are postmarked around 1915. I don’t know why it’s called “Black Bridge” as it clearly crosses the Sugar River, not the nearby Black River. In the future I will try to hike along the riverbed in order to get better photographs. I’m not certain about everything in this description, nor do I know what railroad owns this bridge. I welcome any additions or corrections to this description.
Old postcard view. Postmarked 1917.
