January 2, 1901
Winter Sports Ice Skating on January 2, 1901 Twelve inches of ice, with fourteen degrees below zero. The most popular sport in Dayton for winter was ice-skating. The most convenient places were Main Street River Bridge and below the Dayton View Bridge. Jesse Booher, a well-known man in Dayton, was a great skater. Another place the Steeles Dam, Island Park Dam, best ice on Miami and Stillwater near the Riverdale hydraulic. After the Roberts fill in the Miami River was made, and the dirt taken out of the river bed with a dredge, a large lake was left from the bridge to First Street, which froze quickly and made fine skating and it was filled every afternoon and evening with skaters.
