Carries Gallon House Road over Abiqua Creek
Design: truss/through/howe
Design Details: The covered Howe through truss Gallon House Bridge was so-named because of its proximity to a local “Gallon House” that reportedly sold bootleg spirits in the early decades of the twentieth century. Built in 1917 at a cost of $1,310, Gallon House Bridge is the last surviving covered bridge in Marion County and the oldest extant covered bridge in the State of Oregon. It was rehabilitated in 1990 and continues to carry vehicular traffic.

Carries Interstate 5 over Santiam River
Design: arch/through/steel
Design Details: The original of these two twin three-span tied arch bridges was build on the Pacific Highway (U.S. 99) in 1946, while the twin was built in 1958 during the constriction of Interstate 5. Both structures were three-span tied arch structures flanked by six reinforced concrete deck girder approach spans. The 1946 bridge served northbound traffic while the 1958 span served southbound.

Carries OR 22 over Whitewater Creek
Design: beam/stringer/steel
Design Details: The bridge is comprised of nine steel deck girder spans of varying lengths between 20 feet and 50 feet. The overall length of the bridge is 320 feet. The deck is 22 feet wide and accommodates two travel lanes and is flanked by decorative concrete balustrades with arched openings. The end piers of the balustrade are flared, and feature bush hammered inset panels. The bridge is supported by four riveted steel lattice towers that are tapered. These towers rest on battered concrete piers, and feature laced horizontal members. Roller bearings facilitate bridge expansion, with the bearings at the south abutment and a fixed shoe at the north abutment. The bridge derives its significance due to its association with Depression-era public works road construction projects. The bridge also embodies distinctive design characteristics of early steel deck girder structures with steel lattice towers in Oregon.

Carries OR 22 Westbound over Willamette River
Design: girder/deck/plate
Design Details: The Marion Street Bridge is a steel plate girder structure with gothic arched piers. The piers are reminiscent of the 1930’s Conde McCullough era bridges along the Oregon Coast and also that of the St. Johns Bridge in Portland. The bridge utilizes the typical standard steel railing found on Oregon bridges during the era. When the Marion Street Bridge opened in 1953 it was the largest plate girder bridge west of the Mississippi River.

Carries Pedestrian/Bicycle trail (former Union Pacific Railroad) over Willamette River
Design: truss/through/pratt
Design Details: The Union Street Railroad Bridge is a vertical lift, Pratt through truss bridge. The bridge has two towers that rise an additional 65 feet above the 35-foot tall structure of the bridge's trusses, a 134-foot-long center lift span, and a total length of 722 feet, excluding the 850-foot timber trestle on the western end. The bridge's five spans sit atop five concrete piers designed to rise 35 feet above mean low water, which was intended to hold the rails 5 feet above the highest possible flood waters. The lift span was designed to provide a 55-foot clearance during high water conditions. The lift span has been inoperable since 1980.
Regular service of passenger and freight trains ended in 1945. The date of the last train to cross the bridge is unknown but is believed to be in the early 1990s. The City of Salem acquired the bridge in 2003 from the Union Pacific Railroad (which absorbed Southern Pacific in 1996) for one dollar. The railroad set up a $550,000 fund for maintenance. A $3.2 million renovation and conversion project transformed it into a bicycle and pedestrian bridge linking Riverfront Park and downtown Salem on the east with Wallace Marine Park and West Salem on the west. The bridge reopened in April 2009.

DESCRIPTION: This covered railroad bridge on the Oregon Pacific rail line was photographed in Marion County on April 22, 1949. It was located at Detroit where it spanned the Breitenbush River. The bridge number was #744-21. Note that the bridge does not exhibit the normal type of roof, but this techique does keep the vital truss members dry. Also, note the barrel on the left side of the entrance. This would contain water or sand to help extinquish a fire. Most of the rails of the rail line were covered by the water of Detroit Lake after the dam was completed.

DESCRIPTION: This covered railroad bridge on the Oregon Pacific rail line was seen in Marion County on April 22, 1949. The bridge number assigned by the railroad was #744-21. It was located at Detroit where it spanned the Breitenbush River. This type of bridge did not have a standard roof. Instead, each of the two trusses was enclosed. Note the upper bracing which was blackened from the smoke of passing steam trains. Most of the tracks of the railroad were covered by the water of Detroit Lake after the dam was completed.
