Gideon Manchester of Portsmouth Custodian of the old stone bridge for a period so long "that the memory of man runneth not to the contrary" (actually for more than a quarter of a century.) In good weather and bad, day and night, he tended the draw. But for his faithfulness and physical prowess the ancient installation would have obstructed navigation more often than it did. He died May, 1906, a short time after the old draw span was unshipped and carried off for junk.
