One Warren PTC through truss on north shore, three Warren (Camelback) Pratt through truss bridges to south shore. Locally, called Number 1 Bridge because it is the first French Broad River bridge east from Newport to the TN/NC state line. THIS BRIDGE NO LONGER EXISTS.

These land piers supported three Howe through truss spans, with two river piers in the middle
The steel through truss spans were dismantled and removed when the new deck girder and pony truss spans were built at the time Douglass Lake was impounded by TVA.. New, higher bridge was built 500 feet downstream to the right. All views are to the south from the north shore, river runs from left to right.

4-span Baltimore (Pratt) truss bridges across the French Broad River
This crossing is a half-mile west and downriver of the concrete deck plate girder Bridge #4, and is necessary because of an unusual horseshoe bend in the river. These bridges were numbered by the railroad company, by the number of crossings of the French Broad River on the Norfolk Southern Railroad between Asheville, North Carolina and Knoxville, Tennessee.

From this angle, it looks like this span is leaning to the right. It is not. Baltimore (Pratt) Truss designs are aligned to how the bridge crosses the river, in this case, diagonal.

Norfolk-Southern French Broad Bridge #4
A Norfolk-Southern train westbound for Knoxville, Tennessee. This deck plate girder bridge replaced a through-truss bridge beside it that was built around 1916. Ole timers with the railroad call it Bridge #4 because it is the fourth French Broad River crossing on this rail line between Asheville, North Carolina and Knoxville.

The French Broad River makes a very pronounced, compressed horseshoe bend here, and high cliffs necessitate two separate river crossings.
