Old Johnsonville Bridge Collapse
On August 5,1915 a steam shovel was being moved from Eva over to Johnsonville. The "A" frame on the shovel failed to clear the overhead bridge superstructure on the swing span causing it to collapse into the Tennessee River. Rail traffic was rerouted across northern Benton Co. and Houston Co. on L&N's Danville Bridge(the same bridge that now has a private residence on it!) The swing span was salvaged and repaired in slightly more than a month, remarkable for the time period. According to NC & STL records a couple were drowned in the mishap. Amazingly, their 9 yr. old daughter was saved, due to the fact that the mattress she had been sleeping on, floated long enough for her to be rescued.
