Design Details: Substructure consists of masonry abutments, steel-encased concrete tubular piers connected by a solid steel partition, and bents of pin-connected laced channels (one bent was added on the south end of the bridge), Composition of the truss is typical. Top chords and end posts are channels with battens. Bottom chords and diagonals are paired rectilinear eyebars. Verticals are small channels with lacing, except hip verticals that are paired rectilinear eyerods. Decorative features included the laced portal with arched knee bracing and laced handrail.

1927 was the year that this tunnel, among others along the line, was widened, reinforced and updated to handle taller, wider rail cars. The original tunnel was bored in 1907 by the South and Western Railroad, which later became the Clinchfield, and the renovations were done by leasee L & N, which placed the 1927 date.
