old meets new. Replacement wood meets original. With Vermonts Historic Bridge program requirements must be met for retention of original wood, leading to splices like this. A more complicated lightning bolt splice would have negated the need for bolts, but is much harder to execute.

Like most of VT's Burr aches this varies from the typical design by having the arch terminate into the lower chord instead of the abutment. On this bridge the outside arch ring exits the covering of the bridge and terminates off to the side of the lower chord. I had noted a peculiarity about the bottom section of the arch ring, so maybe a poorly executed modification?
