Oblique View Of Bridge, Looking Northwest
There is a wonderful sandy beach beneath the south approach span of this bridge. It is a popular recreational area. In the mid 1980s, the State of Wisconsin DOT must have gotten a deal on blue paint, since almost every truss bridge in Wisconsin is painted this shade of blue.

Your First Clue your quarry is lost is a curve in the road...
When you see the road curve slightly before the bridge you're looking for, you can be pretty sure your target is gone. Professor Kevin Patrick, of Indiana University of Pennsylvania says that when a straight road curves slightly, crosses a bridge, then gently curves back to the original alignment, the bridge is a replacement that was built next to its predecessor. Sadly, that's true here and I was too late to get the deck truss that was here.

...and then you find the replacement
This isn't exactly a UCEB with some faux rocks cast into the concrete parapet walls and piers, but it certainly lacks the romance of a deck truss.

West Portal
Putnam Drive is a misnomer. This path, labeled "Putnam Drive" provides access to an outdoor ecology lab owned by the University of Wisconsin Eau Claire. It also serves as a student walkway, providing four stairways to State Street. (There is no evidence on State Street that there is a bridge here, except for the black, pipe railings that can be seen above the portal.) The "Tunnel" is actually a large, steel culvert.

West Approach Span Footing
This plate girder deck approach span carries a manufacturer's plaque from Lassig Bridge & Iron in Chicago, dated 1898. The bridge predates this span by at least two decades. While the exact build date is unknown (at the time of this posting) it is known that it was built prior to 1882. A photo of the bridge, owned by the Wisconsin Historical Society, shows a CStPM&O train on this bridge on September 1, 1882. The locomotive is on the approach span, also open lattice.
