The Iowa side of the Mississippi River
The ferry will sometimes wait here if there are no passengers. There is a semaphore on the Wisconsin side to signal the ferry. NOTE: Updates on the ferry begin with photo #8, taken in June 2012. The tug has been replaced and the barge has been refreshed.

New! Improved!
As the marketers would say if they were creating a television ad for the ferry. Seriously, the tug has been replaced since my last trip on the ferry a few years ago. Service has improved as the ferry now runs 7 days although it still only operates 9 to 9 each day.

I was told the ferry is still the same old barge but it has been spruced up and is sporting new green paint.

Carries State Highway 80 over Wisconsin River
Design: girder/pony/plate
Design Details: Built in 1929 as a Bascule bridge since it crossed the Wisconsin River, part of the Fox-Wisconsin waterway. By this time, the Wisconsin River portion was essentially abandoned; it was probably seldom opened. The design seems to be identical to the Eureka WI and Kewaunee WI bascule bridges.

Muscoda Bascule Bridge (lost)
From a postcard; the bridge spans the Wisconsin river. Because of the shifting channel of the sand-choked river, there was no guarantee the bascule span would be over the deepest water. The design similarity to the Eureka WI and Kewaunee WI bascule spans is apparent.
