Carries Milwaukee Street over Rock River
Design: arch/deck/open
Design Details: "Watertown city officials declared the existing Milwaukee Street Bridge unsafe in 1929 and began considering plans for erecting a steel girder or concrete bridge. Daniel B. Luten, a prominent bridge designer in Indianapolis, submitted a plan for an open arch concrete span. The Common Council accepted Luten's design and let the construction contract to the Eau Claire Engineering Company. The firm completed the three-span bridge in November 1930. The bridge is significant for its aesthetic lines and for its affiliation with the Indianapolis designer."

The balustrade seems to have a problem
This particular example demonstrates both how the neoclassical balustrade is constructed and why it fails. A single rod acts as support, however, when the balustrade is damaged and the rod is exposed to the elements, it will rust and ultimately fail.

Historical Plaque
The Cole family was quite prominant in Watertown history. None of his descendents live there now but family reunions are sometimes held there. Upon John Cole's death, he bequeathed his property to the city to be used to build a library, a rest home and park land. There was enough money left in the estate in 1931 to build this bridge.

Carries Pedestrian Walkway over Rock River
Design: truss/pony/bowstring
Design Details: "In 1866, Zenas King from Ohio received a patent for an innovative tubular iron-arch design. Increasing the sectional area of the top chord toward the ends of the arch, he claimed, strengthened the bridge. Built c. 1877, the Tivoli Island Bridge incorporated this design principle. The King Iron & Bridge Manufacturing Company in Cleveland, Ohio, popularized the tubular iron-arch by numerous examples throughout the United States.
"Apparently, the Tivoli Island Bridge was originally part of a four-span structure over the Crawfish River in the village of Milford. In 1906, two Watertown residents arranged to have the two-span section moved to its present location at Tivoli Island. In Wisconsin, the bridge is one of only seven remaining bowstrings and the last example of a tubular arch design."

The Tivoli Island Bridge was part of a four span bridge across the Crawfish River in Milford, Wisconsin. When it was replaced, two of the spans came here, one reportedly went to Fort Atkinson and the whereabouts of the fourth span are lost to history.

Carries Ush 18-Racine Street over Rock River
Design: truss/deck/warren
Design Details: "The Racine Street Bridge is an 11-span [Warren] deck truss bridge built by the Milwaukee Bridge Company from Wisconsin State Highway Commission plans. With three Warren deck truss spans that equal more than half the bridge's total length, the Racine Street Bridge was locally dubbed the "Super-Bridge" because of its size. Only 14 deck truss bridges are extant in the state, and the deck truss bridge has been classified as a rate type. The Racine Street Bridge is one of southern Wisconsin's three remaining deck truss bridges. A previously completed Determination of Eligibility completed in 1994 concluded that the Racine Street Bridge is elegible for the National Register of Historic Places under Criterion C in the area of engineering."

Remains of an old abutment from an old bridge?
This serves as a barrier to keep cars from entering the bridge from the parking lot. But it looks weird as it resembles an abutment that came from an old bridge which must've been relocated here when the bridge was replaced. If this was the case, then the next question is from which bridge did this come from....
