Local artisans have added their comments to the plate. This bridge was built by the prolific King Bridge Company of Cleveland, yet, it is only the second King Bridge that I have located in Wisconsin. (The other is the Tivoli Island Bowstring in Watertown.)

Westbound Right of Way

This track once carried the C&NW "400" passenger train, so called because it covered the distance between Chicago and St. Paul in 400 minutes. At its introduction in January, 1935, the "400" was the fastest passenger train in the world for a distance over 200 miles. The train was later renamed the "Twin Cities 400" because the C&NW started using the 400 moniker on all its major passenger trains. The 400 made its last run in 1963 and all passenger service ended in 1971 with the formation of Amtrak.

South Elevation

Neenah Lake is a flowage caused by the damming of Neenah Creek. The dam was built to power a grist mill, probably in the mid 19th Century. According to the WDNR, it is about 61 acres in size and reaches a maximum depth of 15 feet. It is located in the Town of Oxford in Marquette County and is also known as the Oxford Mill Pond. While the age and lineage of this bridge are unknown at this time, it is located a few hundred feet west of the 2nd Court Bridge, a King Bridge built in 1911. The trestle rests on four rather unusual pier configurations, groupings comprised of four columns, tied together with plate girder beams. The tracks are carried by short, plate girder deck spans across the pier groupings followed by longer spans between the piers.

Center Pier

When this span was built, it's likely that the engineers were dealing with very unstable soils and sediments as a part of being a mill pond. There might have been a fear of just single or side-by-side piers at this location. The long span - short span mix probably allowed for less steel in the girders which saved money, reduced the bridge structure height, and made more clearance over the water. Of course, it's also likely that the savings in steel was used up in building the extra piers, but who knows?
