Design Details: 5 span, 595 foot deck arch truss. A distinctive feature was a square cut-out in the span over the river. This was probably to accommodate the Federal requirement to allow vessel navigation on this waterway.

Carries Wisconsin Avenue / Island Street (now part of Wisconsin Avenue) over Fox River (US Army Corps of Engineers Canal)
Design: girder/deck/plate
Design Details: The Vertical-Lift span was designed to raise 55 feet, and crossed the Corps of Engineers canal; the portion south of this was 4 simple riveted girder spans crossing the Fox River proper. The truss structure joining the towers had two functions: to stabilize the towers, and to carry a water main pipe over the canal. When this bridge was scrapped, the Corps of Engineers required that it be replaced with a moveable span. A few years later, the Corps defunded the Fox River Navigation Canal.

1 Shiocton 07.JPG
One of the two steel piers. Each consists of steel I-beams driven into the riverbed with side bracing. The purpose of this pier is obvious - to reduce the stress in the span. Here's where it gets interesting: the piers are of modern welded construction. The reinforcement on the bridge girder above it is riveted. A panel breaker with joggled ends similar to the others is fitted between the reinforcing angles. The reinforcing angles are also riveted, but installed against spacer bars in lieu of the joggled ends. My guess is these piers and reinforcements were added long after initial construction to increase the load rating of the bridge. Since both riveted and welded technology are used, I would guess this was done in the 1950's or 1960's.

Cribbing under the end of the swing span on the concrete pier. The wonderful blacksmith work bending the vertical stiffeners over the bottom angles (joggling) is clearly visible in this view. This kind of artistry is not required with welded construction.

Shiocton Rail Bascule Bridge
In doing a bit of research, I discovered that the swing bridge replaced an earlier bascule bridge. The bascule bridge collapsed as a locomotive was crossing it, killing the engineer and fireman. This photo shows the destruction.

But on this one, the turntable and ring gear are gone, replaced by timber cribbing! I presume the castings fractured, as castings are prone to do. And railroads always have lots of treated timber on hand, so that was the material to use for the repairs.

The current state of navigation on the Lower Wolf River. During the days of the lumberjack, this river was filled with log rafts towed by Growser Tugs to feed the sawmills and paper mills of the Fox River Valley. Today, it is fisherman's heaven.

This bridge was a wonderful concrete multiple-arch bridge, with a dual-leaf riveted steel bascule span over the canal. The current bridge replacing it is an undistinguished multiple-span concrete girder and pier bridge.

A version that was never built...
At first, I thought I'd found the blueprints... until I noticed that there were no arches and the Bascule was single leaf. I presume this was a proposed version that wasn't built.
Photo taken by Robert Thompson in November 2009

Single-leaf versus dual-leaf Bascule span...
This is a closeup of the Bascule over the canal. It would have required a very deep counterweight pit that would not have stayed dry without pumps.
Photo taken by Robert Thompson in November 2009
149560
Another version that wasn't built
This version has a Bascule with lift cables to the counterweight. The counterweight rides on a track on the cleverly curved tower truss. The counterweight pulls hardest at the top, with the force reducing as it goes down, matching the force required to balance the span. The counterweight nearly touches the road when the bridge is raised.
