The North Approach
This delightful 1939 arch bridge was built with lannon stone, a common material used for depression era arch bridges in this area. The stone is actually dolomite but takes its name from the area from which it is quarried. This bridge is located in Cedarburg, on Highland Drive, and crosses the Milwaukee River. There is yet another dam on the river here.

Entrance to WE Energies Port Washington Power Plant
I cannot confirm if this bridge belongs to the City of Port Washington or to WE Energies. The power plant is located on the south shore of Sauk Creek. The bridge allows access to the edge of the harbor and is used primarily by anglers who cast off the edge of a pier that, in the past, supplied the power plant with coal. (The plant has been rebuilt as a natural gas plant.)

Well, looking east, actually. To the east is an overhead crane that was used for unloading coal when the Wepco (Wisconsin Electric Power Company, now WeEnergies) power plant was coal fired. The HAER photos were taken by Martin Stupich, July 7, 1987, and he provided the captions. Apparently, his direction got twisted slightly when he found this bridge.

The east face
Once known as the "Red Bridge," this structure was built in 1876 from timbers milled in Baraboo, Wisconsin and hauled to this location for assembly. A center pier was added in 1927 to support the weight of automobiles. In 1940, the Ozaukee County Board voted to forever preserve this bridge. It is the last historic covered bridge extant in Wisconsin. (A replica covered bridge, the Springwater Volunteer Bridge was built in Waushara County in 1997.)

Prof. Kevin Patrick, of Indiana University of Pennsylvania, says that when a straight road curves slightly, crosses a bridge, then gently curves back to the original alignment, the bridge is a replacement that was built next to its predecessor. That is obvious here, except that the original bridge is extant here.

I believe this traction car is coming off the east side of the bridge, headed northbound for Sheboygan from Milwaukee. There are currently outriggers that carry a walkway today, on the north side of the bridge. I believe this walkway is on those same outriggers. Carries Bridge Street over Milwaukee River
Design: truss/through/pratt
Design Details: The Bridge Street Bridge is a single span, single lane Pratt through truss that was erected in 1888. Built by the Wisconsin Bridge and Iron Company, it was identified in Cultural Resource Management in Wisconsin (the state's cultural resource management plan) as one of only six pre-1895 examples of that bridge type. As well, Cultural Resource Management identified the Wisconsin Bridge and Iron Company as a prolific bridge builder in the state. Indeed, the firm built five of the six aforementioned pre-1895 bridges. With its integrity very much intact, and the fact that no more than four of the six bridges previously cited exist today, the Bridge Street Bridge is significant as an excellent and rare example of an early Pratt through truss that was built by an important Wisconsin bridge building company.
UPDATE July 2010: The bridge was relocated to Lime Kiln Park, where it crosses a drainage ditch and serves as a display and pedestrian walkway.
