The West Face
This is a massive structure but it is also difficult to shoot. The east face is completely hidden by foliage and I hope I can get back during the winter or spring to shoot it when the leaves are gone. From here, this line curves to the south and goes through Amherst on the Wilson Street, Lincoln Street and Main Street Bridges. (In that order.)
Photo taken by J.R. Manning in July 2009

The Deck
I drove right across this thing three times before I realized it was, in fact, a bridge and the one I was looking for! The west edge of the bridge runs parallel to the edge of the roadway, shown here on the left. The right face angles to the right from here, following at approximately 40° from this position. (See photo #4.) You can see the patch in the asphalt paving that filled the crossing when the tracks were removed to create the recreational trail that terminates here.
Photo taken by J.R. Manning in July 2009
144104
Looking East at Extant Line
At one time, there were three tracks here, one over the bridge (along with Second Streeet) one under the bridge and this one that curves along the north edge of the bridge but does not cross it. (This right-of-way crosses old US 10 on the County Highway KK Bridge just a couple hundred yards around this curve. Many years ago, the line continued to Scandanavia, Green Bay and Algoma, where it met the Ann Arbor Car Ferry Service.
Photo taken by J.R. Manning in July 2009
144105
Old Alignment
The tracks branched off of the right-of-way (shown above) and went west to Plover, first crossing this structure. (You're looking at the deck of the subject bridge.)The east face of the bridge runs parallel to this old alignment, about 20 feet to the left. The track on the right eventually joins the track that passes beneath this structure. The chain link fence runs on the west face of the structure.

As you can see, it has been converted to a recreational trail.

Recreational Trail Marker
The county historical society placed this sign at the head of the recreational trail. At one time, there were two passenger stations here in Amherst Junction. The covered stairway gave shelter to the passengers who transferred between trains. Parts of the lower platform are still there but currently cannot be seen because of foliage.
Photo taken by J.R. Manning in July 2009

The Old Depot
This is the location of the old passenger depot on the upper track. As I mentioned, most of the east side of this site is obfuscated by foliage. If you look closely, you can see the old railing that kept passengers from rolling down the embankment to the lower tracks.

Depot Stairs
This stairway is about all that is left of the old Amherst Depot. It is a part of a walkway, along the west edge of the bridge and right-of-way that is extant but badly overgrown. It is not easy to see and I would bet most locals don't even know it is there.
