According to the map, Kosin Drive continues to the south. However, the road ends rather abruptly and becomes a two-track. That little black mess on the left is a well-weathered "No Tresspassing" sign - like I had any intention of following the two-track, anyway.

The Manchester Street Bridge was relocated to this setting in the late 1980s after its useful life as a road bridge reached an end. A tip o' the hat to Brenda at the Baraboo Visitor's Center for her guidance that led me to this location. This is the last camelback truss extant in Wisconsin since the Kennan-Jump Bridge was demolished in 1989. Bravo to the folks of Baraboo who had the vision to save this important piece of history! The Manchester Street Bridge was documented by the Historic American Engineering Record before it was replaced/relocated.

This bridge was built by the Chicago & Northwestern Railway in 1899. It shares many features with other bridges along this right-of-way that once ran from Madison to Elroy. Many of the stone arch bridges (Goette Road, Viaduct Road) and other plate girder deck bridges (Baraboo Street Bridge) appear to use limestone that was quarried from the same place.

The Deck
One would hope that a bridge from the late 19th Century, even a concrete slab, would have some romance to it. The NBI says it was built in 1896 and was rehabed in 1967, but after hunting for it in a hard-to-find place, the old bridge looks suspiciously like it's been replaced with this rather modern slab, probably sometime since the turn of the 21st Century.

It appears there is the main line and two sidings here. At one time, this was a two-track mainline, although there was always just one track that crossed Lake Wisconsin.

Oblique View Of Bridge, Looking Northeast
There really isn't anything out of the ordinary about this bridge except that it appears to be completely original and unmodified (except for deck resurfacing) from its construction in 1940. In that light, it is a well-preserved example of typical design and construction of Wisconsin bridges from the late 1930s through the mid 1950s. For example, the original steel railings are in place. Most railings of this type have long since been replaced.

Under the swing span
Notice the ship's capstan mounted under the bridge; there is no room to work capstan bars here, so it is shaft-driven from above. This is an asymmetrical span; the ballast required to balance it is contained beyond the capstan.

My best guess is that the bridge was winched open and shut with the capstan. It didn't happen often, as this section of the Fox-Wisconsin system was essentially abandoned from 1910 until it was officially abandoned around 1950.

An attempt to stabilize the failing bridge pier, which is being undercut by the current? No, according to John Marvig's post, they are removing the remaining fixed spans before they collapse into the river.
