Barrel Shot Looking West

Like the west approach, there is a slight turn in the east approach to the straight deck. Perhaps this bridge was meant to be skewed but wasn't. The highway makes a sharp 90º turn to the north about 250 yards to the west of the bridge.

Actually, it's a core sample taken from the deck and the plug has failed. This core was taken on the northeast end of the deck, a corresponding core was taken on the southwest end of the deck.

Construction Area Looking East

Utility poles have been moved about 200' south of the road, along the tree line. Trees have been removed from the area. This does not bode well for the future of this bridge, and indicates that the sharp curve (to the left, out of sight of this photo) is going to be softened.

FOUND!

This elusive bridge has been hiding from me for two years. One has to want to go to this bridge as it is about as far removed from anything as it can be and still be located in Wood County. This bridge reminds me of the Prairie River Bridge in Langlade County, also built in 1906, although that one appears more delicate than this one. Both are closed and remain well hidden. The Lynn Line Bridge does appear to be a haven for teenage activities of several kinds.

In order to avoid a installing a skewed bridge, the road curves to the northwest, then to the northeast to cross the stream, then turns northerly to Lynn Line Road. Why one road has two names, a different name on each side of the bridge, is unknown.

Replaced? Ya think?

This looks like the result of a major urban renewal project, with streets rerouted, a sports/recreation/baseball complex enlarged and a new, long trestle built to replace the ancient wooden structure that used to cross Oak Street. As near as I can tell, Oak Street doesn't even exist here anymore with a ball diamond over the top of where it once was.

This bridge was built to allow land access to Wakely Tavern on the Wisconsin River. The tavern is located at what was once the end of the rapids that gave Wisconsin Rapids and Nekoosha their names.

Point Basse Marker - Opposite Shore of the Wisconsin River

POINT BASSE

Five rapids covering a distance of about three miles in this area were referred to as Nekoosa (swift water) by the Chippewa Indians, who made their campground on high Swallow Rock overlooking these rapids. At the lower end of the rapids, Wakeley’s tavern served as a rendezvous and resting place for the river traveler and lumber raftsmen. Wakeley’s was the nucleus for the development of a settlement named Point Basse (low point). The name was later changed to Nekoosa.
The settlement became a key town during the colorful era when lumber was rafted down the river from the pineries of the North to Mississippi River markets.
Daniel Whitney built the first sawmill on the Wisconsin River here at Whitney’s Rapids in 1831, making Nekoosa the birthplace of Wood County. From this first harnessing of the river’s power developed scores of power facilities making the Wisconsin River the hardest-worked river in the world.
