This is an early surviving example of a design of continuous truss bridge unique to Alabama, and it is complimented by deck truss approach spans. The unique design features a traditional continuous truss design with towers, however at the ends of the continuous unit the truss drops below the deck level. This bridge was originally designed with an extremely unusual sidewalk that was positioned in the center of the roadway. To access this uniquely positioned sidewalk, a ramp led under the bridge and up through the center of the roadway. Sadly, this unique attraction has been removed to widen the roadway although a portion of the ramp remains in place at the south end.
