This is a beautiful, highly ornamented arch bridge. The bridge was originally constructed at another location known as the Tegetthoffbrücke. In 1898, this bridge was no longer needed when that section of the river was covered, or vaulted, making bridges unnecessary. As a result, the bridge was moved to its current location as a replacement for the old Kleine Ungarbrücke which dated to 1853. During the relocation the bridge was narrowed from 19 meters to 11.6 meters. Anton Biró (today known as Waagner-Biro AG) was the company responsible for the relocation of the bridge.
The bridge was damaged in the war in 1945, but repaired afterward.
The bridge has an arch rib composed of riveted sections of curved iron that form a circular column or tube. If this bridge were in the United States, this design would be called a Phoenix column after the Phoenix Iron Company that invented and patented it there. It is assumed that this bridge in Austria and its iron has no connection to that company, however it is interesting to see the same design employed by other fabricators.
