This is an unusual overpass ramp that displays multiple details that are evidence of a substantial engineering effort. The bridge's superstructure is an unusual curved concrete deck girder design that is made more unusual by a cantilevered design that consists of suspended spans resting on cantilever arms. The spans that carry the ramp over the traffic lanes do not appear to display the cantilevered detail, the suspended spans only occur on the approaching spans. Additional engineering complexity in the bridge is realized by the changing elevation of the bridge as it rises and falls over the CA-1 highway, while also achieving a superelevated curve for the roadway it carries. The arched shape of the girders as well as the original concrete railings that remain on the bridge provide a graceful, streamlined appearance. Despite a relatively young 1950 construction date, this bridge is noteworthy for its lack of alteration and unusual, complex design. It was noted that the spans with the cantilever arms and suspended spans have been seismically retrofitted with cables that appear to act as a failsafe to catch the suspended span(s), should an earthquake knock them lose from the cantilever arms that they rest on.
