This bridge was built in 1938, but because its trusses do not use built-up beams and composed of only rolled beams, the bridge looks newer than it is. The bridge includes steel stringer approach spans that include a suspended spans with a pin and hanger detail.
The bridge in more recent years had its substructure completely replaced. The new piers are massive and considerably wider than the historic trusses that were placed back on the piers. This is somewhat alarming since it suggests that a long term plan is to demolish the historic trusses and place a new, wider substructure on these piers.
The bridge has seismic retrofits added it it. If the bearing hinge pins on this bridge's truss spans fail during an earthquake, the truss will drop a tiny distance, bringing a backup fixed bearing (attached to the bottom chord) to rest on a raised platform on the concrete abutment. For the steel stringer spans, a retrofit is added around the rocker bearings. If an earthquake causes motion that attempts to force the rocker to move beyond its designed distance, special pieces of steel welded to the bottom of the stringers on either side of the pier will bump into the pier, preventing the superstructure from moving too far.
