This bridge was built in 1923 to serve as a trunkline bridge for what was in 1923 M-16. This would become US-16 in 1926. This route was later retired with the completion of I-96 in 1962, which also had retired this bridge as a trunkline bridge.
This bridge is on the same former trunkline route as the Berlin Fair Drive Bridge. This particular bridge was built by the Price Brothers of Lansing, Michigan. This bridge appeared to be in excellent condition, and is an excellent example of a rare structure type designed in Michigan and built only in Michigan and Ontario. Its significance is even greater when its 90 foot size is considered. The 90 foot plan, designed by the Michigan State Highway Department represents the largest size that this bridge type came in. Longer crossing would require multiple spans. The 90 foot plans are the most impressive, since their arch is tall, and pierced openings are present on the girders.
The 2006 National Bridge Inventory shows the bridge in amazingly excellent condition despite no major work on the structure since its construction. This particularly excellent condition means that this bridge does not really even need a restoration, but should instead be maintained, perhaps with a protective sealant to ward off salt damage. Minor isolated spalling and efflorescence on the bridge could also be repaired.
